For many, the perfect pair of sunglasses is the finishing touch to any outfit, and what’s better than an accessory that not only complements your look, but protects your eyes too?
While some people may be keen to jump on the latest trends and pick up a cheap pair of sunnies from the high street, these fast fashion alternatives don’t tend to last. Quality eyewear will stand the test of time, while also protecting your eyes from harmful UV rays.
At JM MacDonald, our experts source styles and brands that cater for both.
Stocking desirable luxury brands including Tom Ford, Ray-Ban, Caroline Herrera and Mulberry, our branches offer something for everyone. And for those who want a more cost effective alternative, our own range of classic sunglasses also features some fantastic current styles.
To help you pick your perfect pair, our retail purchasing manager and eyewear fashion expert Elizabeth Aiken has shared her top fashion tips, so no one is left wondering “which sunglasses suit my face”?
Hi Elizabeth! Can you tell us more about this year’s fashions - what are the top trends for 2021?
There are a few looks circulating for 2021, the first being colour. There is a real emphasis this year to go brighter and bolder. People seem to have become more adventurous, so while black and brown shades will always remain popular and in style, it’s nice to see customers become more experimental with their colourways.
There has also been an influx in neutral, transparent or crystal-coloured frames. While they don’t necessarily hit the colour mark, they are certainly a bold statement style that nods to current fashion, with the added benefit of pairing well with any outfit.
Shape also plays a huge part in style, and this year we’re seeing a mix of fashionable cat-eye frames alongside vintage rounder style frames, proving popular.
Taking inspiration from these fashion insights, our own range has six new styles to suit all options.
Our Kennedy frame comes in two colourways, dark purple and red, and the Sabine frame a stunning bold purple, both featuring the fashionable feline frame. Our South frame is also cat eye shaped, but in a striking smoke crystal colour, adding a slight edge to any look.
While trends are always fun to buy into, we remain passionate about classic styles.
August comes in transparent grey while East comes in dark grey, both in a Wayfarer shape, providing the ultimate sophisticated look.
Our sixth new style, West, is a square shaped frame coming in two colour options, a bold black and a softer brown. This angular style is a true classic, making the West a shade that will always be in fashion.
What sunglasses suit what face shapes?
I think in past years, people have often jumped on trends as opposed to investing in a style that compliments their features. One of the key benefits of buying from an optician is the expert advice you can receive regarding what suits your face shape.
All of our branches have skilled dispensers who have not only had training on the correct styles to suit various shapes, but years of experience seeing how certain brands, frame sizes and lens colours can aid complexion too.
Sunglasses for round faces
It’s key to avoid a round frame for those who have a rounder face shape. A bold and structured rectangular frame can combat and distract from this.

Sunglasses for oval faces
An oval face shape is the most versatile and allows customers to choose any style they like based off personal preference.

Sunglasses for square shaped faces
Those with a square face tend to have more angular features, so we recommend rounder and thinner frames to help soften those angles and provide a more balanced look for the face.

Sunglasses for heart shaped faces
The aim here is to balance out the narrowness of the chin. Wearing a frame which is round or oval can actually soften the look across the cheeks, helping proportion the face more.
